How effective is Hip Replacement? Some numbers crunching…

Hip replacement surgeries are one of the most successful surgical procedures all across the globe. It has a lot of benefits. The most significant benefit of hip replacement surgeries is the great reduction in pain it offers to the patients.

In some patients, hip pain can get highly debilitating and can make the smallest movements extremely painful for the patient.

In most cases of hip arthroplasty, the pain suffered by patients is greatly reduced. In other cases, the pain is eradicated.

Hip replacement procedures can be life-changing for a lot of people. You may find yourself unable to partake in hobbies and activities you enjoy due to the excruciating pain you feel at the hip, hip replacement procedures usually mean that you will be able to go back to most of those activities after recovery and total rehabilitation.

To put some measurable figures to these, hip replacement surgeries have a success rate of more than 97% [1]. This means that 97 out of every 100 patients that undergo hip replacement experience a dramatic reduction in pain after the procedure.

The reduction in pain usually translates to improved mobility. You will be able to move with greater ease. You will be able to perform difficult movements like stair climbing and other rigorous activities.

Many people that have undergone hip replacement surgeries have also reported a better quality of life following the procedure. Other related problems like depression are eased significantly.

Hip replacement also reduces the tendencies of some chronic medical conditions like diabetes and heart failure.

Recently, researchers analyzed data from more than six thousand patients who got their first hip replacement surgeries between 1993 and 2005. They also analyzed data from more than two thousand patients that underwent revision replacement surgeries within the same period.

According to the results of that study, about 90% of patients who had reported their pain as moderate before the procedure said they had mild or zero pain five years after the replacement.

This was closely the same with patients who reported their pain as severe before the procedure. 89% of them said they had little or no pain five years after the procedure. 80% of patients that had moderate pain before their revision surgery reported mild or zero pain after five years.

In the same vein, 78% of patients that reported severe pain before their revision surgery had little or no pain five years after the revision surgery.

While hip replacement is generally celebrated as an effective treatment for moderate to severe hip pain, it is not without limitations. A small percentage of patients still have problems with activities like walking and stair climbing after their procedure.

About 7% of patients have been reported to have moderate limitations 5 years after the surgery. Overall, hip replacement surgeries are very effective treatment procedures.

Another factor that reduced the effectiveness of hip replacement is its associated complications. However, improvements in medical practice through scientific research and improved metallic implants have reduced these complications and have made hip replacement surgery one of the most successful and effective procedures.
